How do you choose self help, psychotherapy, or counseling for diet and weight loss help
Is it better to seek professional help for my weight problem or should I go the self-help route?
Self-help is certainly a viable way to solve a problem. In the U.S. we are big users of self-help. Did you know there are at least 2000 self-help books published each year?
We usually think of self-help as being separate from more formal psychotherapy and counseling. However, many psychologists and other mental health professionals integrate self-help methods into their professional work. So the two can be separate, but they can also be combined.
As for your own personal situation, no one can answer the question for you. It is your decision to make. Some people find it easier to tackle a weight issue by turning to a self-help group or self-help materials such as books, the internet, and inspirational films. The effectiveness of such methods has been documented in psychology research. People who were interviewed about their self-help activities rated them as being very instructive and beneficial.
A weight problem is a tough nut to crack for many women. As with other stubborn problems, solving a weight issue is a very personal matter that always involves behavior changes. Self-help materials or groups can be encouraging, inspirational, and a good source of information when you are attempting to make important changes in your behavior. Professional psychotherapy and counseling can also provide this help.
It really is a matter of what works for you. Take some time to consider what would be a good choice for you. Remember, this is not the kind of decision that’s written in stone. You can always change your mind. You can try one method and then move on to the other.
